The AccuWeather.com Long-Range Forecasting Team has Chicago right in the middle of where the worst of winter 2011-2012′s snow and cold is expected to be.
“Last winter was nasty in Chicago. This winter could be just as bad,” warned AccuWeather.com Expert Long-Range Meteorologist Bob Smerbeck. This will make it the fifth winter in a row with snowfall well above normal and temperatures well below average for the city. The last time there were this many back-to-back winters with snowfall well above normal was in the 1970s.

Hey, Chicagoland, reset your automatic thermostat!

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Now that Daylight Saving Time has arrived, remember to adjust your automatic thermostat to keep your Chicago home warm and comfy this winter. We actually lose as much as four and a half hours of daylight from summer’s late sunsets to winter’s early dusk. Most of us who return home from work will be doing so in pitch darkness. Make sure your home furnace anticipates your arrival. Set your automatic thermostat to begin warming your home a few degrees more starting at about 4:30 to 5:00pm. You may want to raise the temp a few degrees more during the dinner and evening hours, especially if the outside temp is extremely cold. And hour before you head off to bed, set your automatic thermostat to lower the temp to around 66-degrees, or the sleeping temperature you desire. If it seems a bit too cool remember, it’s healthier for your body and you’ll be saving energy costs when the furnace isn’t working hard at night. Besides, that’s why they make blankets. Most people like to have their house (in winter) a bit warmer when they wake up. Unless you are planning on staying in all day, only raise the temp a degree or two–or not at all. There is no reasons to warm an empty home if you’re heading off to work. Your automatic thermostat is your friend. Adjust it for your comfort and maximum energy savings. Winter-like temperatures in Chicago can last well into March, even April. Also, since your furnace is running often during the colder months, check your filters more often. Nothing prevents your furnace from working harder than it should than having a dirty filter. And for goodness sake, if you haven’t had a furnace Clean & Check for winter, call All Temp today. You’ll save $40 too, for a limited time. Our Clean & Check is now only $89.95. Enjoy a warm, cozy winter. We promise, Spring will return.
